I had a customer that had a brand new Hewlett Packard (HP) Touch Screen desktop and she has been having intermittent issues for about 6 months. She told me that the wireless Internet connection was dropping off constantly. This is after she sent the PC back to HP and they returned it after the repair. I do not know what was done while it was being repaired. All I can tell you is that the problem persists. Which were sluggish starts and loss of internet connection? She called HP tech support back and they remotely connected for 2 hours and did all sorts of test according to her. Again I can’t tell you what was done, but it did not fix the problem and according to the customer the tech support was rude with her because they told her that there is no issue. She did tell me they did a speed test and determined that the Wi-Fi was getting optimum speed. However, they contacted me to do a onsite to further troubleshoot the issue.

Upon arriving I notice that they sent a Wi-Fi card that they suggested to replace. I did not replace it because I wanted to make sure it was not a hardware issue. I noticed the Kaspersky 2011 was installed on the PC. The customer stated that this did not come with the PC. So first I downloaded Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and updated the database and then ran a complete scan. To my surprise it came back clean no viruses found. So I then updated the Broadband Wireless WIFI drivers directly from the Hewlett Packard site. I rebooted the PC and ran Ccleaner and defragged the hard drive. I decided to remove Kaspersky 2011 because of problems I have seen with it on other PCs’. So after I took it off I explained to the customer that she should use the PC as normal for a couple of days and then call me back to give me an update. I should note that the Wi-Fi router was downstairs on top of a speaker. I told her to move the Wi-Fi router off the speaker which she did move it before I left.

Two days later I did get a return phone call and Hallelujah it worked. She said that the PC was much faster, stable with no issues; no loss of Internet connection, no locking up and no lagging video while watch YouTube.

To summarize if you are having problems with your Internet and it seems that it is not a hardware issue take a look at your Anti-Virus protection. Is it expired? Do you have two or more of the Anti-Virus software installed? And or you sure you are not currently infected?

I have seen multiple issues with Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee, AVG, and Kaspersky causing slow Internet connection, constant scanning of hard drive for apparently no reason which causes your PC to run slow. If your subscription is about to expire your Anti-Virus will warn you to renew instead of protecting your PC. A loss Internet connection due to the Anti-Virus saying that you are infected is a result of quarantine PC.

I hope this article helps you with your issue and if you wish to read more of my problems solved, Click Here.

Trend Micro Antivirus plus Anti-spyware 2008 offers a variety of features designed for the home and small office, this is a statement taking from a review of this software. Here is what I found out this software when I did a service call.

I just cleaned a brand new notebook that was running Windows 7 Premium with Trend Micro installed, the subscription was 2 months from being expired but the PC was infected by a Trojan infection. I scanned it with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it and it removed over 1085 infected files. Unfortunately Trend Micro is similar to Norton Anti-Virus, I have noticed that if the subscription is about to expire with 2-3 months remaining the PCs’ becomes infected. Why is this?

This is my opinion but I think the reason is due to the anti-virus programs having a feature that disables the protection if the subscription is nearing expiration. I have seen this to many times and I think this is a problem that needs to be addressed. I am looking for comments about anybody having this type of experience with Trend Micro only. Anybody leaving other comments not regarding this post will not have their comment approved.

Once the infections were removed the notebook worked just fine. No issues. The customer did decide to uninstall Trend Micro shortly after that and I will install Avast Free Home Edition. In my experiences Avast is the best Anti-Virus protection on the market. A lot of people confuse Avast with AVG but they are not the same. I get a lot of service calls from people running AVG that get infected. Similar to Norton Anti-Virus, AVG has issues of not updating their database. I have notice that if the database is out of date this is the main reason AVG becomes corrupt allowing malware to effect the operating system. If not caught in time the PC will fail to boot and you will lose your data. Many times I had to return to a customer home because AVG was reloaded after I fixed it and recommended AVAST. Of course the additional service call produce more income so AVG is my friend, just kidding. Seriously though I do not recommend AVG, the free version or paid. I have experience issues with both versions.

Thanks for the visit and come back soon.

Bloatware is define as software that is loaded from the factory when you purchased a new computer. A lot of times it is extra software that is not needed to run your computer. The reason why it is installed on your hard drive is to reduce the cost of your new computer. For example if you purchase one of the programs that is pre installed on your PC the computer maker makes money and sends a portion of that money back to the software maker. This reduces the cost of the PC in the long run.

So that’s why you have all this extra software or bloatware installed on your PC.

Their are utilities that can take off this Bloatware but it is very easy to manually remove it yourself. All you need to do is go to your control panel and then to add/remove software and you can select which ever program that you do not need. The question is what program do you need are do not need. Simply select the programs that you do not use and select delete. If you never used Peach Tree and do not think that you will need just delete it. You will not mess your PC. I suggest to remove only one program at a time and then reboot. Yes this may take longer but it is a safe bet. By getting rid of the extra software you will create more hard drive space and and some of the programs automatically start when your PC starts. By removing the Bloatware from your PC, this will cease it for starting when Windows loads, thus allow your PC to boot faster and clearing up any wasted memory that was being used by a program that was not being used.

Thanks,

I recently upgraded from Time Warner Extreme to Time Warner Wideband and had several issues.
1. I was supposed to be getting 50 MB per second. Well as it turns out, I do get the speed but not consistent. On occasion I get 70 MB per second. That is the good news. It is fast and as advertised you do get this speed.

2. Ever since I updated from Time Warner Extreme my WIFI is not working. I reset the modem around 50 or more times and still no WIFI. I checked the admin page of the router by typing in http://192.168.0.1/ and pressing enter. The default logon is admin and the password is motorola, all lower case. I am telling you this because there were no instructions in the box that I received from Time Warner. No CD, nothing to tell me what to do. Maybe they forgot to put in the instructions. Go Figure. So I tried to trouble shoot for about 3 hours and never could get the WIFI to come up. I read online that you may have to set the Motorola Surfboard modem to NAPT Mode. NAPT is a special case of NAT, where many IP numbers are hidden behind a number of addresses, but in contrast to the original NAT this does not mean there can be only that number of connections at a time. In NAPT an almost arbitrary number of connections are multiplexed using TCP port information. The number of simultaneous connections is limited by the number of addresses multiplied by the number of TCP ports available. Well that did not work. Don’t do this. You will lose your Internet connection and you will have to hard reset your modem. Well after doing this the WIFI did activate, however it did not stay on and I lost my Internet connection to my wired PC.

I called Time Warner and they had me to do all the troubleshooting that I had already done. That was level 1 support. One thing I notice is that they do not have the capability or allow their staff to get on your PC remotely. I would think that they would employ some type of remote software to assist in troubleshooting. Just a thought. So then I get transferred to the 2nd level support. He did a line test and told me that my cable signal was out of specifications. So now I have a tech coming out to the house. In about 1 week a Time Warner tech came out and adjusted the signal and he said that due to the length of the cable in my house the signal cannot be optimized. I thought at first I was going to have to rewire the whole house. He did fix the issue of my speed jumping to 50 MBps and then dropping to 10 MBps. Now it was staying around 50-30 MBps, however he did not address the WIFI issue. He told me I had to call back for that. Not a happy camper at this point.

A week later no WIFI, I called back and escalated the issue. In the mean time my daughter and wife was asking me why the WIFI was not working and told me to downgrade. I said no way. So I started searching online about Time Warner Wide Band WIFI issues. I read somewhere that you have to pay for Time Warner to activate the WIFI on the Motorola Surfboard. I am already paying $99.00 a month. I was not informed that WIFI was extra, but it makes since now why it did not work. It is disabled or locked out until you pay for that feature and as far as I know there is no way around it.

However, I fixed it because that’s what I do. You can just save that extra fee that Time Warner wants to charge for the Wide Band WIFI access. I do not know the extra cost all I know is that I was not going to pay it. Just get you a WIFI router and plug it in the Wide Band modem and it works flawlessly.

I hope this post saves you time and a little money.

This was an issue that I was having after someone use my computer. This is my main PC, and I need everything to work and work well. So maybe somebody else is having this problem. I notice that I could not get any sound from some of my apps. Why other apps works just fine. After checking my device manager, there were no issues with my hardware. I rebooted and Windows log on sound was okay, yet I could not get any sound out of Spotify which is a new online music service like Pandora and Slacker Radio. I also was not getting any sound out of Windows Movie Maker, I produce videos for some of my fixes and after working on the the video it would play but not sound. I could hear anything on YouTube and I could hear my DVD movie just fine. So immediately I thought I was infected. Updated the virus database and perform a quick scan. No viruses found to my surprise. I then checked for any installed programs and nothing related to sound was installed so I thought after further troubleshooting I notice something popping up when I played any type of sound. It turns out she installed a Media Player that was trying to take control of some of the audio playback devices. In may case it was VLC Media Player 1.1.11. All I had to do was uninstall it and reboot, or so I thought. After rebooting my music from Spotify still did not work. I then thought well I was just remove Spotify and reinstalled it. Well Spotify does not installed on your hard drive, at least there is no program to uninstall. So I downloaded Spotify again from the Internet and reinstalled it.

Eureka that worked, problem solved. Now to leave a not on my PC not to install any additional audio players to my visitors.

Thanks for the visit take care until next time.
